From chapter 1:

We need to fix Christmas. We have to stop buying into the notion that more is better and that the size and expense of gifts are equivalent to how much we care for one another. We need to stop believing that doing it all is productive and that having it all is meaningful!

From chapter 2:

We have the power to create meaning in our lives. The meaning doesn't come from the outside and the symbols in and of themselves do not provide the meaning for us. The symbols-the wreath, the Nativity scene, the Christmas tree-only help us to express the meaning that is already inside of us. Without Advent Christmas day can be over before it begins! If you are able to do nothing else that I suggest in this book, at least consider celebrating Advent.

From Chapter 4:

We owe it to our children to provide them with special memories and traditions that they can pass along to their families. Protect your children from the over commercialization of Christmas. Teach them to find meaning within by celebrating with reverence, love and generosity.

From chapter 7:

Most Americans feel that Christmas day is the most stressful day of the year. I think that the expectations of perfection that we see in movies and advertising that surround this holiday have put an enormous amount of pressure on us. We could all have less stress and less tension around the Christmas Holiday if we all stopped celebrating it with mass consumerism and extravagance. Keeping Christmas simple and toned down is possible. All you have to do is commit to keeping it debt free, communicate honestly, and stay true to yourself.

From chapter 9:

Many of us have learned that celebrating a Christmas that is over commercialized does not bring meaning to it nor does that make us wise. It can't. Common sense tells us that. Staying true to our deepest values is wise.
